Love is the Light of Truth

Love is the Light of Truth

“Be sober and self-controlled. Be watchful. Your adversary the devil, (hasatan, the adversary) walks around like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour.” 1 Peter 5:8

An adversary is someone who is against God, and the image of a roaring lion is only one figure of speech used to describe the contrasts between our Creator’s definition of Light and darkness.

What greater deception could there be than to call darkness light?

When God created Light He said it was Good.  He clearly warned Adam not to eat from the fruit of only one tree in the garden.  The Creator said you can eat from any tree but Not the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Bad, because you will “die” if you eat its fruit.

The adversary is referred to first as a crafty serpent.  It’s the serpent who places doubt in Eve’s mind about God’s warning,  “Did God really say you would die?”  “Your eyes will be open and you will be like gods, knowing Good and Bad.”  Eve desired the fruit that would make one wise, (like God) and she ate, and giving it to her husband, he ate, Genesis 3:5, 6.

Like the Roaring Lion and poisonous Serpent, metaphors of life-threatening danger are used throughout the Bible to warn us of the deadly consequences of sin.

What is Sin?  It’s our desire to Know, (Yada #3045) meaning to Experience, what our Creator warned us was bad.

Just like Adam and Eve, we desire to be our own gods, not by doing what God says is right but doing what is right in our own eyes, Deuteronomy 12:8; Judges 17:6.

Sin is choosing darkness/death over Light/Life.  The consequence remains death but death is not eternal.  God made sure mankind could not eat from the Tree of Life until they overcome, Revelation 22:14.

Genesis 3:22 And the LORD YHVH God said, “The man has now become like one of us, knowing good and evil. He must not be allowed to reach out his hand and take also from the tree of life and eat, and live forever.”

Cain was Eve’s eldest son.  We can learn from his story how mankind’s testing continues.

Cain and his younger brother Abel both offered their offerings to God, God was pleased with Abel’s offering but Cain didn’t do what he knew was right.

“If you do what is right, will you not be accepted? But if you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at your door; it desires to have you, but you must master it.” Genesis 4:7

God warned Cain about the unseen enemy called sin, just waiting for the chance to pounce through that door and master/control him.  Cain had the same choice we face today, control our emotions or they will control us.

“The anger of man does not achieve the righteousness of God” James 1:20

Tremble, (be agitated) and do not sin; Meditate in your heart upon your bed, and be still. SelahPsalm 4:4

Cain chose to give into his feelings of anger toward his brother and completely mastered by his emotions he murdered Abel.

Human Nature Prefers Darkness

“And this is the judgment: the light has come into the world, and people loved the darkness rather than the light because their actions were bad.” John 3:19

Descriptions of the Darkness:

Satan, Slanderer, (to speak against, blaspheme, back bite, mud sling, character assassin, gossip) Accuser, (criticizer, faultfinder, complainer) Adversary, (enemy, antagonist, opponent, challenger, rival) Archenemy,(nemesis) Foe, Hinderer, Evil, (wicked, sinful, malicious, immoral, criminal) a thief, stealing, adultery, covetousness, a murderer from the beginning, Father of all lies, deceit, Author of confusion, appealing to the five senses, selfishness, prejudiced,  stinginess, foolishness, Malice, hatred, spite, bitter jealousy, meanness, nastiness, cruelty, mischievous, malevolence, ill will, hypocrisy, guile, envy, deceit, pride, unkindness, pretense and fear.

Knowing God’s Love exposes the enemy, because God is Love and His acts of loving kindness shine so brightly in contrast to the darkness, the difference is clear.

Descriptions of the Light:

Loving Kindness, Compassion, Pity, Grace, Gracious, Full of Mercy, Kindness, Forgiveness, Gentleness, Patience, Righteousness, to do more than is required, counts others above themselves, is not jealous, is not proud, does not boast, does not dishonor,  does not seek things for it’s self, does not become angry, does not blame, does not rejoice over evil but rejoices together in truth.  Love endures all things, believes all things, hopes all things, remains steadfast in all things.  Love will never perish.  Love is a perfect state, it is eternal, it is an action word.  Greater than Faith and Hope.  Love is Humble, Wise, Pure, Peace-loving, Obedient, Impartial, Sincere, full of the fruit of the Spirit, God is Love, (the Hebrew meaning  of love, Ahav, means much more than a feeling, emotion and intimacy,  it is also an action word meaning doing, providing, protecting…)

Self-Discipline or Self-Gratification

When we choose to follow the Way of Love; courageously, humbly, gently, tenderly, kindly, patiently, joyfully, faithfully, peacefully and impartially, because we learn self-disciplined.

We eventually learn to recognize deception and Truth as clearly as we know darkness and Light.  We also know there is a spiritual, metaphorical door.  We are not helpless, we are able to master our bad desires.  It is by our own bad desires we are enticed and then lead astray and it is by our good choices we overcome them. James 1:14

The Light of Truth Sets us Free, John 8:32

Our wrong thinking instantly goes from our sub-conscious to our conscious mind as the Light of Truth breaks us free from our bondage to darkness.

“He leads the humble in what is right and teaches them His way.” Psalm 25:9
