“Love does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs.” 1 Corinthians 13:5.
This is my greatest challenge when it comes to obeying God’s law of Love. Even though I know better I read this verse and think, yeah but…is it just me or is there anything more difficult than keeping your mouth closed when you are offended?
Somehow I am always able to find some way to justify myself every time I stumble and fall into offense.
Now I know some people who are able to keep their mouth shut but in their heart the offence is held like a poison. I used to admire those who had the ability to hide it so well but I have seen the results of holding an offense. It is like a black mold, hidden in the darkness, but it shows to those around them as negative comments, criticism, gossip and slander.
“It is our glory to pass over an offense” Proverbs 19:11
Yeah but, how does one Pass Over an Offense?
Does it mean ignore and pretend, even when the offence cut right into our heart like a knife?
Does it mean let everyone know until we feel better so we can pass over it?
Does it mean confronting the offender directly, as if they would be understanding or maybe even apologize?
So how has that worked for you? In my experience it has made it even worse.
Passing over an offense means not stumbling over it in the first place. Love is the Way to step over an offence.
Great peace have those who love your law, and nothing can make them stumble. Psalm 119:165
When I was young I was painfully shy. I worked hard, as I got older, to learn to stand up for myself. But as I study God’s law of Love I see that it teaches a completely different Way. A Way that is actually opposed to our human nature.
Offence reveals the parts of our human nature that are not obeying the law of God’s Love.
“because human anger does not produce the righteousness, (good deeds) that God desires.” James 1:20
Is any offence worth more than having Peace with God in your heart? Stay in the Light, learn your lesson quickly and step over an offence as if it were a cow pie.
If you do stumble, do not blame the cow pie. Instead, look at the reason you stumbled.
Anyone who loves their brother and sister lives in the Light, and there is nothing in them to make them stumble. 1 John 2:10
