Each of these words has a physical and Spiritual meaning. The Eternal Spirit of our Creator reveals Spiritual things through our finite logic.
Physical emotions had me mastered. I followed them to the heights and let them take me to the lowest of depths. This is my lesson of learning, to show the physical is bondage and Spiritual Truth is Freedom.
“My thoughts are not your thoughts, Nor are your ways My ways,” declares YHVH. “For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways higher than your ways and My thoughts than your thoughts.” Isaiah 55:8,9.
Our Quest to stay on That Fleeting Mt. Top of Happiness
I thought to myself, this must be what true love feels like! The symptoms of infatuation began to make my heart rate accelerate, I had more energy, a bounce in my step, a smile on my face. I was consumed with thoughts of my new found love from the first thing in the morning until I fell asleep at night. My heart didn’t touch the ground for over a year and I was certain it was mutual. I couldn’t wait to say our wedding vows, including the words of 1 Corinthians 13:8, “Love never fails.”
What Kind of Love Never Fails?
Our Creator’s Spiritual Love is Everlasting. The original Hebrew calls it, L’olam CHasdow, meaning Eternal, Faithful, Unwavering, Merciful loving kindness, Favor, Grace, Compassion does not fluctuate like our fickle feelings and hair trigger emotions.
If someone “makes us feel happy” we are revealing our feelings have complete control and we have given them the power over how we feel.
To say the least, human emotions are powerful. God’s warned Cane, before he murdered his brother Able, that he could master his sin or it would master him. We can learn from Cane’s example, those who do not learn to master their harmful emotions will be mastered by sin. Genesis 4:7
Giving into human feelings can make us do things you never dreamed we would do. Like puppet strings, it’s fun when when we are lifted up, but the bondage of those strings is also what takes us down.
Jealousy and Fury
I got married because I felt the Mt.Top High of infatuations and I remember thinking, this must be what True Love feels like! Those memories were quickly obscured by feelings of disappointment, sorrow and loneliness. The man I had once accredited for the height of my happiness was not the blame for the depth of my emotional pain.
I experienced feelings of jealousy as I noticed our marriage was being threatened. Even I was shocked by the adrenaline that flowed through my veins, like a Mamma bear, I felt capable of shredding the other woman with my bare hands. That infatuation I’d once called love paled in comparison to the depth of my hatred.
Divorce plagues the emotions like death without a funeral. There’s no closure or grieving the loss of your future together, and what does one do with the good memories. Now separated by association only a wall of bitterness and resentment remained.
It took well over a decade before I learned to recognize the difference between my human feelings and Spiritual obedience. Although humans have feelings they are instructed control them and not be controlled by them, Ephesians 4:26; Romans 6:12,16.
The Truth about Love, Passion and Infatuation
In contrast to my story above, YHVH’s Love does not fluctuate, He Is Love, 1 John 4:16. His Covenant Loyalty means unfailing spiritual obedience, devoid of any fluctuating human feelings. He Is Spirit, John 4:24. He is not needy or insecure, nothing makes Him feel…He is Sovereign, He Is One, Complete and Whole, Deuteronomy 6:4.
Our Creator’s passion can not be compared with human passion. One is selfless and the other is selfish. He gave us His Word for our good but we still rebel and let our feelings master us, even when we know our physical passion is to be exclusively within a Loyal Marriage Covenant, and if it isn’t it has destructive consequences.
Fury and Jealousy
YHVH’s Fury (same word as Passion in Hebrew) and Jealousy are not to be equated with human feelings. YHVH is completely Good, Just and Right. To be jealous of what threatens those you love is not wrong. It is our human nature that turns it into something selfish. Our physical emotions are only a shadow of Spiritual reality.
When we read phrases about YHVH’s, Cup of Wrath, Fury, Anger etc. we need to make sure not to project our human thinking onto anything YHVH has purposed for mankind’s ultimate Good. Romans 8:28; Psalm 119:75; Hebrews 12:10
Psalm 66:10 “For you tested us; you refined us like silver.”
Our Loving Father disciplines those He loves, Hebrews 12:6 . Guiding, testing and proving us, training us in the way that leads to Everlasting Life.
Faithful Covenant Love does Not Fail, it perseveres and prevails
Covenant Loyalty is a choice, whether in marriage or toward our obedience to do Right in reverence, honor and Love toward our Creator. We can be assured the difficulties we face, during this very temporary time on earth, are the very things that will set us free, Psalm 105:19
