The Day of Atonement, Yom Kippur

The Day of Atonement Is Our Creator’s 6th Holy Festival

You can call them Jewish Holy days but you’d be wrong.  There’s a reason the Creator of the universe, YHVH, (He Exists), says they are, “His Appointed Days,” Leviticus 23:2.

The Day of Atonement, physically modeled by Israel, foreshadows YHVH’s Spiritual Atonement of All mankind.  It begins the 10th day of the 7th Lunar Month, Leviticus 23:27; Isaiah 66:23Psalm 86:9Revelation 15:4

“for it is on this Day that Atonement shall be made for you to cleanse you; you will be clean from all your sins before YHVH.” Leviticus 16:30

Atonement, comes from the Hebrew root word, Kopher, (#3724), it literally means, CoverLike Noah was instructed to Cover, (Kaphar #2722b) the Ark in pitchGenesis 6:14

The “Mercy Seat” is Also The “Cover” on the Ark of the Covenant

“You shall put The Mercy Seat, (Kapporeth #3727 from Kopher) on top of the ark, and in the ark you shall put the testimony (The Ten Commandments) which I will give to you.  Exodus 25:21; Hebrews 9:5

“He shall put the incense on the fire before YHVH, that the cloud of incense may conceal (#3680 Kasah) The Mercy Seat, (Kopher #3727)… Leviticus 16:13

To have Mercy and To Cover, the Hebrew verb Kaphar, (3722), both represent Atonement: to Reconcile, to Redeem, to Repair, to make Propitiation, to expiate, to Pardon, to Forgive, to Give Mercy, to Pay a debt, such as the price of a life, to Ransom…

Yom Kippur (#3725) means, Day of Atonement.  It is one and the same as The Day of JudgementBoth Judgement and Mercy are appointed on this day.

For Judgment without Mercy will be shown to anyone who has not been Merciful.  Mercy triumphs over Judgment. .James 2:13

Mercy is Given to Those Who Give Mercy:

“Blessed are the Merciful, for they will be shown Mercy.” Matthew 5:7

“With the Merciful you show Yourself Merciful,” 2 Samuel 22:26

“For if you Forgive men their trespasses, your Heavenly Father will also Forgive you.”  Matthew 6:14; Matthew 6:15; Mark 11:26

“…Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of Mine, you did for Me.” Matthew 25:40

“In everything, then, do to others as you would have them do to you. For this is the essence of the Law (Torah) and the Prophets.” Matthew 7:12

“For the Son of Man will come in His Father’s glory with His angels, and then He will repay each one according to what he has done. Matthew 16:27; Matthew 18:35; 2 Timothy 4:14; Psalm 62:12;  Jeremiah 32:19; Romans 2:6; Job 34:11; Proverbs 12:14; Proverbs 24:12; Revelation 2:23

Many believe Jesus “saved” them from the curse of sin and death, but they refuse to confess and turn from their hateful grudges, bitterness, negativity, partiality and other offenses toward God.

To Believe is the Hebrew word, Aman #539, (also to trust or have faith), belief is like a tent peg driven into a Secure, (Aman) place,” Isaiah 22:23.

Like Abraham who believed and did what God said, Genesis 15:6Genesis 26:5

The Day to Afflict Our Soul, (Our Physical Appetites/Desires)

“This shall be a permanent statute for you: in the seventh month, on the tenth day of the month, you shall humble/afflict (Anah #6031) your souls and not do any work, whether the native, or the alien who sojourns among you; Leviticus 16:29

‘Then on the tenth day of this seventh month you shall have a holy convocation, and you shall humble (Anah) yourselves; you shall not do any work.” Numbers 29:7

The Fast is more than simply denying our body of food and water for 24 hours.  Isaiah prophesies the results of a true fast will bring a change to our soul: Isaiah 58:6-Isaiah 58:9.

“The Fast” is used as a Synonym for “Day of Atonement”

“By now much time had passed, and the voyage had already become dangerous because it was after The Fast, (Day of Atonement) So Paul advised them,”  Acts 27:9; Leviticus 23:27

We All Need Mercy Because We All Sin

“Surly there is no righteous man on earth who does good and never sins.” Ecclesiastes 7:20

“Your iniquities have separated you from your God and your sins have hidden His face so He will not hear, Isaiah 59:2

“All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” Romans 3:23

The Day of Atonement for All the Earth

“He Himself is the Atoning Sacrifice for our sins, not only ours but the sins of the whole world,” 1 John 2:2.

Picture this, once a year Israel’s High Priest entered the Holy Temple to make atonement, on the horns of the incense alter, with the blood of the sin offering, Exodus 30:10; Leviticus 16:15; Leviticus 16:18.

The picture of the physical High Priest foreshadowed the Spiritual.  Jesus/Yehoshua, (YHVH’s Salvation) the Messiah Is Mankind’s Spiritual High Priest.  He entered the Spiritual Temple, not made by human hands, and atoned for the sins of all people, with His own blood, Hebrews 9:24.

Hebrews 9 explains this in detail,

“Confess” Turn Back to The Way of Life and Immerse

Now before you jump to Universalism, Torah reveals it was the “Confessed” sins of the people that were forgiven, Leviticus 26:401 John 1:9

“He who conceals his sins will not prosper, but whoever confesses and renounces them will find mercy.” Proverbs 28:13; Psalm 32:5; Job 31:33Genesis 3:8

Adam concealed or hid his sin in his heart and in Adam All die, being under the curse or consequence of sin, which is death, (separation).  In Messiah All live, Hosea 6:7; ; 1 Corinthians 15:22Romans 5:12

Our Creator is quick to give Mercy to All who Confess and return to Spiritual Life.

The fruit, or actions, of Spiritual Life is evidenced by our Love, (Merciful Loving Kindness) toward one anotherJohn 13:351 John 3:14.

The 10 Days of Preparation

During the ten days between the Day of Trumpets and Day of Atonement we have time to prepare.  It’s time to do some soul searching in the Light of YHVH’s Everlasting Word of Truth, Psalm 119:160

Just like King David asked, “Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my thoughts.  See if there is any offensive way in me; lead me in the Way everlasting, Psalm 139:23Psalm 139:24

‘The sum of Your Word is Truth, And every one of Your Righteous ordinances is Everlasting,” Psalm 119:160

Sanctify/Cleanse them by the Truth; Your Word is Truth.” John 17:17; Ephesians 5:26
