Shavuot is the Festival of Weeks

How The Wheat Harvest Reveals Spiritual Life

Shavuot Pentecost

Shavuot is the Hebrew Word Meaning Weeks

In English Shavuot is referred to as Pentecost, derived from the Greek word 50th.

It is also called the Feast of Weeks, Numbers 28:26, Oaths, First-fruits of the Wheat Harvest and the feast of In-gathering.

“You shall celebrate the Feast of Weeks, that is, the first fruits of the wheat harvest, and the Feast of In-gathering at the turn of the year.”  Exodus 34:22

Shavuot fits 4th and center on our Creator’s 7 branched Menorah aka The Golden Lamp-stand; Exodus 25:311 Samuel 3:3

Menorah Feast days

From the Festivals of Passover, Unleavened Bread and First-fruits, 7 Sabbaths are counted.  This means there are 7 weeks between the First-Fruits of the Spring Barley harvest and the First-Fruits of the Summer Wheat Harvest.

Sheaf wave Barley
The Sheaf from the First-fruits of the Barley harvest was given to the Priest to wave before YHVH so it would be accepted, Leviticus 23:11

You shall also count for yourselves from the day after the Sabbath, from the day when you brought in the sheaf of the wave offering; there shall be seven complete Sabbaths. You shall count fifty days to the day after the seventh Sabbath; then you shall present a new grain offering to the LORD, (יְהוָֹה YHVH #3068).  You shall bring in from your dwelling places two loaves of bread for a wave offering, made of two-tenths of an ephah; they shall be of a fine flour, baked with leaven as First-fruits to the LORD, (יְהוָֹה YHVH #3068).”  Leviticus 23:15, 16, 17

The countdown to Shavuot begins on the day of First-fruits which is always the day after the Sabbath that falls within the 7 day Festival of Unleavened Bread.

In The Third Month

Seven Sabbaths/Weeks ends in the third (Biblical) month, which is summertime, and it will always land on the day after the Sabbath.

In the third month Moses was also given The Torah (Teachings) of YHVH, (He Exists) over 3,300 years ago:

“In the third month after the sons of Israel had gone out of the land of Egypt, on that very day they came into the wilderness of Sinai.” Exodus 19:1

And God spoke all these words:  Exodus 20:1

In the third lunar month Jesus sent His Spirit, Joel 2:28Matthew 3:11 Mark 1:8Luke 3:16Acts 1:5Acts 2:17

The First-fruits of the Wheat Harvest, the Torah and the Spirit

What do these three have in common?  They all occurred in the third month, at our Creator’s 4th Appointed Time, (מוֹעֵד Moa’ed).  His Appointments with mankind that He set at creation:

And God said, “Let there be lights in the expanse of the sky to distinguish between the day and the night, and let them be signs, (אוֹת oth #226) to mark Appointed Times, (מוֹעֵד Moa’ed #4150) and Days and Years.”  Genesis 1:14

These connections are clearly explained when Jesus is called the First-fruits of the dead, 1 Corinthians 15:20.   Jesus is also called God’s Word, (Torah); John 1:1.  Jesus is called Anointed, (Messiah).  Holy Oil was required for anointing prophets, priests and kings.  The Holy Anointing Oil represents The Holy Spirit; Luke 4:18Acts 10:38; Isaiah 61:1; Matthew 12:18; Isaiah 42:1 Luke 4:1; Isaiah 11:2; John 3:34; Joel 2:29; Acts 10:38;

Metaphors, Parables and Idioms Oh My!

Figurative language doesn’t always make sense when translated, it can easily be misunderstood and it can be taken literally.  That is why the proud heart is said to be blind and deaf when it comes to spiritual perception.

Only the humble (circumcised) heart is given eyes to see and ears to hear the Spiritual connections, revealed by the physical examples found in our Creator’s Word.

“This is why I speak to them in parables: ‘Though seeing, they do not see; though hearing, they do not hear or understand.” Matthew 13:13Deuteronomy 29:4

Jesus and his followers used figurative language that clearly connected Him to YHVH’s Festivals, Leviticus 23:12, 13.  He is called the Lamb of God, John 1:29.  He said the Unleavened Bread is His Body, Matthew 26:26, the Wine offering is His Blood, Matthew 26:28, the precious Blood of the Unblemished (Sinless) Lamb, 1 Peter 1:19.

Jesus said, “I Am The Bread of Life,” John 6:48

I Am the Living Bread that came down from heaven.  If anyone eats of this bread, he will Live forever.  And this Bread, which I will give for the Life of the world, is My flesh.” John 6:51

The Unleavened Bread and the Leavened Bread

“Get rid of the old yeast, that you may be a new unleavened batch, as you really are.  For Christ/Messiah, our Passover lamb, has been sacrificed, Therefore let us keep the Feast, not with the old bread, leavened with malice and wickedness, but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and of truth 1 Corinthians 5:7,

Why was Unleavened Bread required at the Barley harvest and two Leavened loaves of Wheat bread at Shavuot?  Leviticus 2:11.

The Kingdom of heaven is also likened to Yeast, Matthew 13:33.   Yeast represents something that cannot be removed once it’s mixed into the dough.  That is why we must become a New, Unleavened, lump of dough (Born again spiritually), to receive the yeast of the Spiritual Kingdom.

Salvation Means the Dead Have Spiritual Life

Many people know the Hebrew Name of Jesus means Savior, but not as many know the name Joshua is transliterated from the Hebrew and Jesus from the Greek.

Joshua is יְהוֹשׁוּעַ, Yeho-shua, in Hebrew and it means YHVH Is Salvation.  Just knowing the meaning of Jesus’ full Hebrew Name will trigger all kinds of connections in His Word.

But Christ/Messiah has indeed been raised from the dead, the First-fruits of those who have fallen asleep. 1 Corinthians 15:20

 But each in his own turn: Christ/Messiah the First-fruits; then at His coming, those who belong to Him.” 1 Corinthians 15:23;

Jesus Ascended up to Heaven on the 40th Day

“After His suffering, He presented Himself to them with many convincing proofs that He was alive. He appeared to them over a span of forty days and spoke about the Kingdom of God.” Acts 1:3; 1 Corinthians 15:6.

On the fortieth day of the count to Shavuot, Yehoshua ascended up to heaven and instructing His followers to wait in Jerusalem for The Promise of His Father, Luke 24:51

“And behold, I am sending The Promise of My Father upon you. But remain in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high.” Luke 24:49

10 Days after the 40th Day Was the 50th Day

It was Shavuot/Pentecost, (approximately 30 A.D.) the First-Fruits of the Wheat harvest (Jesus) was accepted and the promise of the Spirit was delivered.  This ensured a blessing on the rest of the harvest and that’s Good News for mankind.

“The Scripture foresaw that God would justify the Gentiles/nations by faith, and foretold the Good News to Abraham: “All nations will be blessed through you,” Galatians 3:8; Acts 3:25Genesis 12:3; Genesis 18:18

The Physical Covenant Revealed the Spiritual Covenant

“This is the covenant I will make with them after those days, declares the Lord (YHVH) I will put My Laws (Torah) in their hearts and inscribe them on their minds.” Hebrews 10:16 (1st Century A.D.)

“But this is the covenant I will make with the house of Israel after those days, declares the LORD (יְהוָֹה YHVH #3068). I will put My law (תּוֹרָה Torah #8451) in their minds and inscribe it on their hearts. And I will be their God, and they will be My people.” Jeremiah 31:33 (7th Century B.C.)

Next Up is the Day of Trumpets

His work didn’t end at the cross.  He will return, descending just as He ascended, this time to restore all things, Acts 1:11Acts 3:21; Romans 8:21

“For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a loud command, with the voice of an archangel, and with the Trumpet of God, and the dead in Christ/Messiah will be the first to rise.” 1 Thessalonians 4:16
