Torah, Prophets and Writings Referenced in Matthew

They will call His Name Immanuel:

All this took place to fulfill what the Lord said through the prophet:  Behold, the virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son and they will call Him Immanuel, (which means, El with us) Matthew 1:22, 23

Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign:  Behold the virgin/young maiden (עַלְמָה a’almah #5959) will be with child and give birth to a son, and will call Him Imman-u-El, (עִמָּנוּאֵל EmmanuEl #6005). Isaiah 7:14

Messiah Will Be Born in Bethlehem

…He asked them where the Messiah was to be born.  In Bethlehem, in Judea they replied, for this what the prophet has written: But you Bethlehem, in the land of Judea, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah, for out of you will come a Ruler who will be the Shepherd of My people Israel.  Matthew 2:5, 6

But you, Bethlehem, (בֵּית לֶחֶם Beth LeCHem #1035) (אֶפְרָת Ephrathah #672) who are small among the clans of Judah, out of you I will come, a Ruler (מָשַׁל Mashal #4910) over Israel, whose origins are of the East, (קֶדֶם Qedem #6924) from the days Everlasting, (עוֹלָם Olam #5769).  Therefore Israel will be abandoned until she who is in labor has given birth; then the remnant of his brothers will return to the children of Israel.  He will stand and shepherd His flock in the strength of the LORD, (יְהוִֹה YHVH #3069) his God, (Elohaw from Elohim #430 אֱלהִים).  And they will remain for now, He shall be Great to the ends of the earth.  Micah 5:2-4

Out of Egypt I Called My Son

Where He stayed until the death of Herod.  This fulfilled what the Lord (YHVH) had spoken through the prophet: Out of Egypt I called My Son.  Matthew 2:15

When Israel was a child, I loved him, and out of Egypt I called My Son.  Hosea 11:1

Then tell Pharaoh that this is what YHVH (יְהוָֹה) says: Israel is My Firstborn son.  Exodus 4:22

Rachel’s Children Were No More

Then what was spoken by the prophet Jeremiah was fulfilled:  A voice is heard in Ramah, weeping and great mourning, Rachel weeping for her children and refusing to be comforted because they are no more.  Matthew 2:17, 18

This is what YHVH (יְהוָֹה) says:  A voice is heard in Ramah, weeping and great mourning, Rachel weeping for her children and refusing to be comforted because they are no more.  Jeremiah 31:15 

Prepare the Way of YHVH

This is he who is spoken of through the prophet Isaiah:  A voice of one calling in the wilderness, Prepare the Way for the LORD (YHVH), make Straight Paths for Him.  Matthew 3:3

A voice calling, Prepare the Way for the LORD (יְהוָֹה YHVH #3068) in the wilderness; make a Straight Course (מְסִלָּה Mesillah #4546) for our God (Eloheinu #430 from אֱלהִים Elohim).  Isaiah 40:3  

Man Shall Not Live on Bread Alone

But Jesus answered, It is written: man shall not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of the LORD (YHVH יְהוָֹה).  Matthew 4:4

He humbled you and in your hunger He gave you manna to eat…so that you might know that man does not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of the LORD (יְהוָֹה YHVH #3068).  Deuteronomy 8:3 

Do Not Put YHVH to the Test

If you are the Son of God, he (satan) said, throw yourself down, for it is written: “He will command His angels concerning you, and they will lift you up in their hands so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.”  Matthew 4:6, 7

“For He will command His angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways. They will lift you up in their hands so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.”  Psalm 91:11,12 

Jesus answered him, it is also written: Do not put the LORD (יְהוָֹה YHVH) your God to the test.  Matthew 4:7

Do not test the LORD (יְהוָֹה YHVH) your God as you tested Him at Massah.  Deuteronomy 6:16 

Do not put the LORD (יְהוָֹה YHVH) your God/Eloheikim (from אֱלהִים Elohim #430) to the test as you did at Massah, (Exodus 17:2-7).

Worship YHVH and Serve Him Only

Away from me satan (adversary)! For it is written:  Worship the LORD (YHVH יְהוָֹה) your God and serve Him only.  Matthew 4:10

Fear (Yare #3372 יָרֵא) the LORD (יְהוָֹה YHVH) your God/Eloheika (from אֱלהִים Elohim #430) serve (abad #5647 עָבַד) Him, and in His Name take your oaths.  Deuteronomy 6:13; 10:20

People Living in Darkness Have Seen a Great Light

…to fulfill what was said through the prophet Isaiah:  Land of Zebulun and Naphtali, the way to the sea, beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles, the people living in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of the shadow of death, a light has dawned.  Matthew 4:14, 15, 16

  Nevertheless, (כִּי Ki #3588 ) there will not be the gloom for those in distress as when at first.  He humbled the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, and afterward more heavily oppressed the way to the sea, beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the Goyim (גּוֹי Nations #1471):  The people (עַם a’am #5971) walking in the darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of the shadow of death, a light has dawned.  Isaiah 9:1,2

Don’t Murder, Not Even in Your Heart

You have heard it said to the ancients, Do not murder, and anyone who murders will be subject to judgement…(even your anger toward your brother will be judged).  Matthew 5:21

You shall not murderExodus 20:13; Deuteronomy 5:17; Deuteronomy 16:18

Do Not Commit Adultery

You have heard that it was said, Do not commit adultery.  (not even in your heart) Matthew 5:27 

You shall not commit adultery.  Exodus 20:14

The Certificate of Divorce

It has also been said, Whosoever divorces his wife must give her a certificate of divorce.  Matthew 5:31

If a man marries a woman, but she becomes displeasing to him, because he finds some nakedness/uncovered shame (ervah #6172) in her, he may write her a certificate of divorce, hand it to her and send her away.  Deuteronomy 24:1  (and He can’t marry her again, once she becomes another man’s wife), Deuteronomy 24:4

Equal Repayment

You have heard it said, Eye for eye and tooth for tooth. But I tell you not to resist the bad person.  Matthew 5:38

eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot, (equal repayment).  Exodus 21:24

fracture for fracture, eye for eye, tooth for tooth, the person who inflicted the injury must suffer the same injury.  Leviticus 24:20

You must show no pity:  Life for life, eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand and foot for foot, (equal repayment).  Deuteronomy 19:21

Love Your Enemy, Pray for Those Who Persecute You

You have heard it said, love your neighbor and hate your enemy, but I say, love your enemy and pray for those who persecute youMatthew 5:43

Do not seek revenge or bear a grudge against anyone, but love your neighbor as yourself.  I Am the LORD (YHVH).  Leviticus 19:18

Depart From Me, You Workers Without Torah

Then I will tell them plainly, I never knew you, depart from me, you workers of Lawlessness, (without Torah).  Matthew 7:23

Depart from Me, all you workers of unrighteousness (aven #205), for the LORD (YHVH) has heard the voice of My weeping.  Psalm 6:8

There is a generation of those who are pure in their own eyes and yet unwashed of their filth. Proverbs 30:12  

Depart from me, you evildoers, that I may obey the commandments of my God.  Psalm 119:115

Israel will cry to Me, O God (Elohay from Elohim), we Know You.  Hosea 8:2

He Carried Our Infirmities

This was to fulfill what was said through the prophet Isaiah:  He took on our infirmities and carried our diseases.  Matthew 8:17

Surely He took on our sickness (Choli #2483) and carried our Suffering (Makob #341).  Isaiah 53:4

I Desire Mercy Not Sacrifice

go and learn what this means: I desire mercy not sacrifice.  For I have not come to call the righteous but sinners.  Matthew 9:13

For I desire mercy not sacrifice and the knowledge of God (Elohim) more than burnt offering.  Hosea 6:6

To do Righteousness (Tzedaqah #6666) and Justice (Mishpat #4941) is more acceptable than sacrifice.  Proverbs 21:3

If only you had known the meaning of, “For I desire Mercy not sacrifice…” you would have not condemned the innocent.  Matthew 12:7

“Does the LORD (YHVH) delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices as much as in obeying the voice of the LORD (YHVH)? Behold, obedience is better than sacrifice, and attentiveness is better than the fat of rams.  1 Samuel 15:22

Family Betrayal

Brother will betray brother to death, and a father his child; children will rise against their parents and have them put to death.  Matthew 10:21; Matthew 10:35

For a son dishonors his father, a daughter rises against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law; a man’s enemies are the members of his own household.  Micah 7:6

I Will Speak in Parables

using a parable.  So was fulfilled what was said through the prophet:  “I will open my mouth in parables; I will utter things hidden since the foundation of the earth.”  Matthew 13:34, 35

I will open my mouth in parables; I will utter things hidden from of old,  Psalm 78:2

to understand the proverbs and parables, the sayings and riddles of the wise.  Proverbs 1:6

I will incline my ear to a proverb; I will express my riddle with the harp:  Psalm 49:4

Now speak a parable to this rebellious house and tell them that this is what the Lord, God (YHVH) says: ‘Put the pot on the fire; put it on and pour in the water.  Ezekiel 24:3

Their Hearts are Far From Me

You hypocrites, Isaiah prophesied correctly about you: These people honor me with their lips but their hearts are far from me.  They worship me in vain; they teach as doctrines the precepts of men.  Matthew 15:7, 8

Therefore the Lord (YHVH) said:  These people draw near Me with their mouths and honor Me with their lips but their hearts are far from Me. Their fear of Me is taught by the commandments of men.  Isaiah 29:13

Keep the Commandments

do not murder, do not commit adultery, do not steal, do not bear false witness, honor your father and mother and love your neighbor as yourself.  Matthew 19:18, 19

 Blessed Is The One Who Comes In The Name of YHVH

…Blessed be the One who comes in the Name of YHVH!  Hosanna in the Highest!
…you will not see me again until you say, Blessed is He who comes in the Name of YHVH.  Matthew 21:9, Matthew 23:39

Blessed is He who comes in the Name of YHVH.  Psalm 118:26

From the Mouths of Children You Have Ordained Praise

Do you hear what these children are saying? they asked.  Yes, Jesus answered, have you never read:  From the mouths of children and infants You have ordained Praise?  Matthew 21:16

From the lips of children and infants You have ordained praise (shown strength) on account of Your adversaries, to silence the enemy and the avenger.  Psalm 8:2

From Able to Zechariah, Righteous Blood is Shed on Earth

Behold, I am sending prophets and wise men and scribes.  Some you will kill and crucify, others you will flog in your synagogues and persecute in town after town. And so upon you will come all the righteous blood shed on earth, from Abel to Zechariah…Look you house if left desolate.  Matthew 10:17; Matthew 10:23Matthew 23:31Matthew 23:34, 35, 37

…as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you were unwilling…you won’t see me again until you say, Blessed is He who comes in the Name of YHVH.  2 Chronicles 24:21
They conspired against Zechariah and by order of the King they stoned him in the courtyard of the house of YHVH.  2 Chronicles 36:15,16

Time and again YHVH sent messengers because He had compassion on them and His dwelling place, but they mocked…

The Desolate House

Look, your house is left to you desolate.  Matthew 23:38

May their place be deserted; let there be no one to dwell in their tents.  Psalm 69:25

I heard the LORD of Hosts declare: “Surely many houses will become desolate, great mansions left unoccupied.  Isaiah 5:9

But if you do not obey these words, then I swear by Myself, declares the LORD, that this house will become a pile of rubble.  Jeremiah 22:5

A Loud Trumpet

…and He will send out His angels with a loud trumpet call, and they will gather His elect from the four winds, from one end of the heavens to the other.  Matthew 24:31

On the third day, when morning came, there was thunder and lightning. A thick cloud was upon the mountain, with a very loud trumpet blast, so that all the people in the camp trembled.  Exodus 19:16

…and in that day a great trumpet will sound and those who were perishing in Assyria will come forth with those who were exiles in Egypt.  And they will worship YHVH on the holy mountain in Jerusalem.  Isaiah 27:13

Future Correction or Future Life

…And they will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.  Matthew 25:46 

And many who sleep in the dust of the earth will awake, some to everlasting life, but others to shame and everlasting contempt.  Daniel 12:2

Betrayed by His Close Friend

Jesus answered, the one who has dipped his hand into the bowl with me will betray me.  Matthew 26:23

Even my close friend, whom I trusted, he who shared my bread, as lifted up his heel against me.  Psalm 41:9

Despised and Abused

30 Pieces of Silver

Matthew 27:9, 10
Then what was spoken through the prophet Jeremiah was fulfilled:  They took 30 pieces of silver, the price set on Him by the people of Israel.
Zechariah 11:12, 13
If it seems right to you, give me my wages; but if not, keep them. So they weighed out my wages, 30 pieces of silver.  And the LORD said to me, “Throw it to the potter”–this magnificent price at which they valued me.  So I took the thirty pieces of silver and threw them to the potter in the house of the LORD.

  1. I like to say that Messiah Yahshua loves the Torah of the Almighty so much that He died for it.
    (But that knocks giant holes in that whole “He died for me” narrative that evangelicals have to spin. He went to the “cross” for reconciliation, to restore the covenant SO THAT one could approach the Almighty. He had already forgiven sins before His death, burial, and resurrection so that wasn’t it.)
